Each order will include 10 pawpaw seeds and will be packed in moist peat moss to keep them healthy for their arrival to ya. If you decide that you would like to do a stratification period before planting, they will need to be put into the fridge immediately and stored for 60-100 days through the winter. They can be sown indoors in the early spring.
Unstratified seeds are generally sown directly into deep tree containers (or directly into the ground) in late Fall. Please do research for your area and plan how you would like to use your seeds before purchase! Some places just can’t grow pawpaws. These seeds come from strong stock, but it is not guaranteed that they will germinate/produce fruit due to multiple factors that are dependent on how they are cared for.
In order for pawpaw trees to produce fruit, you need male and female and genetically different seeds. For this reason, I harvest my seeds from my own orchard and other places in the wild to improve the possibility of fruit. Pawpaws are fickle and fruit is not guaranteed due to these factors. To further improve your chances, you could use my seeds and another seed supplier when planting.
Pawpaw trees can be grown in USDA zones 5-8. Store seeds in the refrigerator, in a plastic bag and keep moist until you can plant them – do not let them dry out.
When planting directly into the ground in the Fall, plant 1 inch deep and 8-30 feet apart. Alternatively, plant 2-3 seeds in patches at least 8 feet apart - when plants emerge in summer (June-ish), thin each patch to the strongest seedling. Protect young trees from deer with fencing. Pawpaws love water, so water at least weekly.
